In June 2013, the UK will host the next G8 summit in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland. Food and nutrition security are important points on the agenda, with the week prior hosting a ‘Nutrition for Growth’ event, as well as an event focused on the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition on the same day. We welcome the focus on food and nutrition security and believe the summit represents an important opportunity for the G8 to take action towards tackling hunger and poverty. However, we are very concerned that new G8 initiatives – the New Alliance for Food Security and Nutrition and pilot partnerships on land transparency – are not being developed in line with recommendations from the Committee on World Food Security (CFS) and may actually undermine efforts towards the progressive realization of the right to food in many African countries.
