Following the newly ratified NGO law which seriously restricts civil society space in Egypt, Civil Society voices its concern and asks the EU to postpone the EU-Egypt Association Council.

In response to the adoption of the restrictive NGO law in Egypt, civil society organisations have issued a joint letter to Federica Mogherini (High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission) and Donald Tusk, President of the European Council, and EU Member States’ Ministers of Foreign Affairs.

The letter asks the EU-Egypt Association Council to be postponed. The organisations ask the EU not to extend a formal invitation to the Egyptian authorities for July 2017. This event would constitute a public political gesture and would be perceived by the public opinion in Europe and in Egypt as an endorsement of Egypt’s policies of the past few months, by the EU and its Member States.
