Ahead of the official EU-CELAC Summit planned for 2017, CONCORD and its partner Mesa de Articulación will organise the 8th edition of EU-CELAC Civil Society Forum on 7-8 of September, with financial support from the EU. For 2 days, civil society from both regions (European union and the community of Latin American and Caribbean States) will discuss recommendations to ensure that solidarity, democracy and justice will be at the heart of future bi-regional policies. Outcomes of these discussions will be added as annexes to the Joint Declaration prepared by CONCORD and Mesa de Articulacíon ahead of the forum.
Why is the EU-CELAC Summit important?
The next EU-CELAC Summit (date and place to be determined soon) will shape the future policies and relationships between the European Union and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
The theme of the next Summit is: EU-CELAC: Strengthening dialogue in a changing environment. The Summit will more specifically be focused around three main topics: climate change, multilateralism and trade.
It is crucial that Civil Society’s voice is heard and taken into account in these decisions. CONCORD and Mesa de Articulacion organise a Forum for CSOs ahead of the Summit, to ensure that civil society’s position from both regions is strong and stands as one.
What are the concerns of Civil Society?
During the Forum, a Joint Declaration which will express shared concerns and gather joint recommendations will be released and addressed to Heads of States.
Based on the main priorities of the Summit, civil society will discuss the following topics at the Forum:
- trade & human rights
- cooperation between the regions in the context of the 2030 Agenda and the Paris Agreement
- political dialogue, considering the role of civil society in a civic space shrinking.

Foro OSC: preparando el futuro de las relaciones CELAC-UE
Antes de la cumbre oficial CELAC-UE prevista para 2017, CONCORD y su socio Mesa de Articulación organizarán la 8ª edición del Foro de la Sociedad Civil CELAC-UE del 7 al 8 de septiembre, con el apoyo financiero de la UE. Durante dos días, la sociedad civil de ambas regiones (Unión Europea y la comunidad de Estados de América Latina y el Caribe) discutirá recomendaciones para asegurar que la solidaridad, la democracia y la justicia sean el núcleo de las futuras políticas bi-regionales. Los resultados de estas discusiones se agregarán como anexos a la Declaración Conjunta preparada por CONCORD y Mesa de Articulación antes del foro.
¿Porqué es la Cumbre CELAC-UE importante?
La próxima Cumbre CELAC-UE (fecha y lugar que se confirmará pronto) configurará las futuras políticas y relaciones entre la Unión Europea y la Comunidad de Estados de América Latina y el Caribe (CELAC).
El tema de la próxima Cumbre es: CELAC-UE: Fortaleciendo el diálogo en un escenario de cambios. La Cumbre se concentrará en tres temas principales: el cambio climático, el multilateralismo y el comercio.
Es crucial que la voz de la Sociedad Civil sea oída y tenida en cuenta en estas decisiones. CONCORD y Mesa de Articulación organizan un Foro para las Organizaciones de la Sociedad Civil antes de la Cumbre, para asegurar que la posición de ambas regiones sea sólida y firme.
Cuales son las preocupaciones de la sociedad civil?
Durante el Foro, se lanzara una Declaración Conjunta que expresará preocupaciones compartidas y reunirá recomendaciones conjuntas dirigidas a los Jefes de los Estados.
Sobre la base de las principales prioridades de la Cumbre, la sociedad civil discutirá los siguientes temas en el Foro:
- Comercio y derechos humanos
- Cooperación entre las regiones en el contexto del Agenda 2030 y del Acuerdo de París
- Diálogo político, considerando la contracción del espacio cívico
